San Carlos Cemetery, Monterey

5/21/14

I really love stopping at Memorials and Cemeteries.  This one happens to be located across the street from my favorite "go-to" in Monterey, the Dennis the Menace Park.  We visited while we were in town last weekend (after playing at the Park, of course!)

A lot of the grounds were grassy and green, some of the land was dirt, and then there was a big section of the Cemetery that was mostly concrete.

There were paved roads to drive a vehicle along throughout the cemetery, though there is also some limited parking out front (mostly used by families going to the park).

It's a big place to walk around with a lot to see.  About 1,400 outdoor crypts. Some of the headstones are undated, and some go back to the 1800s.  A couple people historically noteworthy have larger gardens dedicated to them at the front, but there are many of the region's original founders laid to rest here.  It was originally established in 1834, and this cemetery is associated with Father Junipero Serra.

It's really a beautiful yard and garden and well-worth walking around; there's so much history and love.  Some of the sites are covered in artificial flowers and other decorations. It's really amazing to see some of the very well cared for sites of loved ones, and made me want to bring flowers back to some of the ones that were on paths a little less worn.  And if you make it here, check out the children's park across the street - it's pretty amazing as well!
