From the 80 to the 505 to the casino. Yes, that's a nice drive.
Until the sun is right in your eyes, blinding you! Dear Lord, please don't let me crash before I get to Cache Creek!
If you'd rather spend your money on clothing than on the slots, you can reach the Vacaville Outlet mall via the 505 as well.
For a great collection of 505 pictures (of the Interstate's shield) see:

I'm slowly writing new reviews of our adventures in and outside of CA. This includes food, fun, and the roads to get to these places. I am sharing my honest personal experiences and photos.

Disneyland City Hall, Anaheim
9/5/13
We'd been planning our Disney trip for my husband's 30th bday for a few months. One month before the trip, my cousin asked if he could join us. It was his 36th birthday and we had driven down to celebrate it with him. Our entire family attended his birthday party, because just days before he had been told he may only have a few days to live.
At this point it could be weeks or months, but it's very unclear.
(RIP Erik Halonen 1977-2014)
So we of course wanted to spend our time at Disney with him. My little cousin Staci also joined us and being a seasonpass holder, she knew all things Disney. She first had us rent a wheelchair ($32 including a $20 deposit) from outside the park. Then, upon entering Disneyland, she told us to stop at City Hall. This is where you can get a pass for front of the line.
I'm told people abuse these, and it makes sense: the waiting in lines is significantly less. There are stories of wealthy OC Moms paying handicapped people in wheelchairs to join them at Disney. And you know what, that's selfish of those people taking advantage, but probably really great for the person in the wheelchair, so I have mixed feelings. There was no way my now very-ill cousin would have been able to wait in the sun while standing in line. He becomes exhausted after walking a few feet. It was exhausting to him just to be pushed around in the wheelchair. The hundred degree weather took a lot out of him and he was in considerable pain most of the day.
The lady who helped us at City Hall was very nice about giving us the pass. Perhaps she could see the pain in his gaunt face. And who's going to lie about stage 4 cancer? (hopefully nobody!) I saw several people rolling their eyes as he stepped out of the wheelchair to get onto rides. Annoyed expressions that "this guy can walk, he's cutting" because they couldn't know that this might be his last trip to Disneyland and this was the only way he would be able to do it.
We made it on almost all of the low-impact rides. There's no way we could have done this without the front of the line pass. My cousin is really positive and had a great day. Positive attitudes real affect your degree of healing so I hope he can maintain it through the hard days. It was a wonderful trip to be able to share with him and keep in my memories. And it was wonderful that Disneyland makes their park so accessible to the people in need of wheelchair assistance.

Golden State Model Railroad Museum, Point Richmond
9/5/13
The Miller/Knox regional area is across the street from the Richmond Ramblers Motorcycle Club. The park had been our original destination, but we couldn't find parking, and most of the people we saw had tattoos on their faces. I'm not hating. I like a good face tattoo as much as the next person, but since we didn't know what sort of area it was in this part of Richmond, we decided just to keep driving. So we drove across the street!! Not to the MC club, to the museum next door!
Sweet baby Jesus! This place is just as cool as the model railroad museum at Larkey Park in Walnut Creek, but bigger!! And with better labeling of the region they're modeling. Not everyone is going to get really excited about checking out a model railroad museum. You can't play with the trains or build your own track. It's a hands-free place meant for observing others having fun. But its still neat to check out!
Unfortunately, we went on Labor Day and everyone was BBQing out front, so no trains were running. But we did get free admission, which was awesome. There's a gift shop too, but it wasn't open.

Yogurtland, Lebec
9/9/13
It had been a long time since I'd last had frozen yogurt so when we stopped by Yogurtland I was surprised to see how it worked. There was a wall of yogurt flavors that you could mix into your cup. I tried three flavors and found lemon to be my favorite! Then I moved on to the toppings. There were probably 50 different ones to choose from and I soon found my cup full of candy toppings, completely hiding the yogurt underneath. My husband also had a cup of fro-yo with all of the toppings! We weighed our treats together (the cost is based on weight) and were shocked when it came out to only $5.38 (for both of us!) Good stuff!
Note: They also have strawberry-infused water in the corner! Yummm!

Blu 42 Sports Lounge, Walnut Creek
9/9/13
Are you ready for some football?! NFL Kickoff Weekend is here! After watching the Raider game at home yesterday, we decided to go out and watch the 49ers with the crowds. We stopped at Masse's and it was packed! Even the pool tables were covered for s/eating, all the way to the front door. We should have just stayed here but decided to go somewhere else instead of searching for a seat.
Blu 42 Sports Lounge didn't have the same problem. In fact, after being carded at the front door we found a seat no problem at a table in front of the big screen. Ten minutes later our server finally acknowledged us after walking by (slowly) several times, and we finally ordered two Bloody Marys. She asked for ID and a credit card at this point. Do they have a problem with people not paying their tabs or something? I asked about the taco station in the corner and she said I had to buy a token at the bar. She had no idea what it cost. Ok, nevermind. It's your job to tell me what youre selling, not mine to go figure it out for myself.
Five minutes later someone else dropped off our drinks. A menu would have been nice at this point. When I finished my drink and my husband was just about done with his, we weren't offered another one so we just asked for our check and went to CJ's Saloon, where we had a rowdy good time.
The food wasn't bad when we ate on a previous visit, so I'd come back for lunch perhaps, but unless we're looking for somewhere quiet to watch football, this probably won't be our first choice.
UPDATE FROM 7/13/13 REVIEW:
Today's lunch at Blu 42 was the first time I'd been in since they reopened under this name in March. I have a tendency to over-order when I'm hungry. Sometimes this works out, and sometimes I get to take some to-go. Today's lunch included 3 tacos (2 chicken, 1 carne asada, $5), a super nacho with beans and jalapenos, cheese, guac and sour cream ($6), and a Caesar salad ($5), with a 24 oz happy hour Bud Light ($5). Husband had two Middleweight breakfast sandwiches with bacon, one on a croissant ($4) and one on an English muffin ($4) with a Coke ($2). - $32.40 total
Husband liked the croissant breakfast sandwich a lot but thought the one on the English muffin tasted like mustard (which I LOVE but he isn't a fan of). We shared the Super Nachos and it was the only thing that wasn't very close to finished. It was a large plate. REally good. I ran out of jalapenos (one per bite is my style!) but the beans and cheese were good and the chips stayed pretty crispy even to the end.
My Caesar salad was great. Not overdressed. There were a lot of croutons. I usually ask for extra but didn't have to here, and actually didn't even finish them. The 3 tacos were pretty much just meat and tortilla. I can't remember if there was pico de gallo but definitely not as much as I would have expected. They came with shredded cheese on the side, and a small side of sour cream and salad. They were okay. I wouldn't think of this place first when craving a taco, but I will keep it in mind when looking for somewhere to grab a quick breakfast or lunch.
The bartender was friendly. We had lots of questions and she answered most of them. She also told me that she delivers food in the morning to local businesses. No minimum purchase. I'm down for some delivery and I work really close! We saw the owners on the other side of the bar and were really surprised they didn't come say hi or really acknowledge us in any way. There was one other person dining when we walked in, but we were the only two in there after a little while. And the place is huge! If I owned an establishment I would make it a priority to welcome customers and introduce myself. At least take the opportunity to ask how everything was and get some feedback and invite the customer to return or tell them about a live band coming up. Something to make them want to come back and remember you by.
There is still a pool table inside but they were out of quarters so we didn't get to play. We walked around though and at the back there is a "Dug Out" room with a private setting sort of feel to it. It has some couches and a TV. Lots of TVs around the whole place. Plus a projectiion-style screen with theater-style seating. We weren't sure what this was for. The seating everywhere looked pretty comfy. We'll be back for their deals during baseball games: $5 for hot dog and beer. Hot dog for husband. Beer for me.

Walnut Creek Tennis Center, Walnut Creek
9/9/13
On a hot afternoon with temperatures in the 90s we stopped in here after the vending machine outside ate our soda money. I had my own refillable water bottle but decided to check out the ice cream. Husband wanted a Gatorade and our friend bought a bottle of water for $1.
I saw Otter Pops at the bottom of the freezer, and after I had one in-hand, I saw a sign saying they weren't for sale. Bummer; it sounded more refreshing than a creamy ice cream treat. No treat for Amy.
We asked about court rentals ($8) - not bad, but most public high schools have beautifully maintained courts that you can use for free (when school's not in session). We like Ygnacio Valley H.S.'s courts
I worked at the Lafayette Tennis Club when I was in high school. It was much bigger than this, but this little shop had cold drinks on a hot day, and that was awesome.

Secrets, Adult Boutique, Pleasant Hill
9/9/13
It's no secret that bachelorette party planning should start here. They have a great selection of items every bachelorette party group will enjoy. Anatomically-inspired straws, pin-the-manly-on-the-man games, etc.
Their selection for bachelor parties isn't great, but perhaps men don't need squirt guns shaped like boobs as much as women need squirt guns shaped like a big dick. :) Yes, women need this.
They have a limited clothing selection and a pretty good selection of adult items for personal use, couples, and perhaps even groups, if youre into that.
Ask the employees questions if you have any, they're happy to help you and probably are familiar with most or all of the items in there. Hint: don't ask other customers questions, that'll probably just come off as creepy and you don't want to be the dick in the sex store.

Everything Under the Rainbow, Concord

This community thrift store was fun to explore. It was pretty small inside but had lots of items from VHS to trinkets to clothing. They had a great sale on already low prices.
I checked out their facebook page when I got home (which I like that they keep maintained with updates on sales on merchandise.) I also learned that they support our LGBT community. (Duh, rainbow!) Good store supporting good causes.

Village Chiropractic and Massage, Lafayette
9/9/13
I've now met with Sandy at Village Massage several times. I think her deep tissue massages are actually helping my posture (which isn't why I'm going, but it's a nice bonus). She's very pleasant and her massages are absolutely wonderful. It's the first time I've ever gone back to the same person, rather than finding another good coupon somewhere else. $60 for an hour is very reasonable anyhow and I look forward to each visit.
Her strong hands begin by warming up the muslces in my back starting with gentle movements along the length of each muscle, never making it feel like she's going against the grain or across the muscles. The pressure gradually increases and she always checks to make sure it's not too much.
During my last massage I was imagining that her hands were ballerinas, performing a beautiful dance across my back and neck. When the session ended I checked her iPod and the song playing was "The Dancer" by Janie Becker. It seemed very appropriate
The only negative thing I can say about Sandy is that she doesn't have a twin clone so that they could work together doing simultaneous couple's massage. And you have to be patient when setting up an appointment. She's booked a month out. Which says enough about her popularity by itself. It's very rare to find someone who is THIS great at their job!
UPDATED FROM 5/9/13 REVIEW:
A GOOD DEAL FROM GROUPON
Really glad I was patient with scheduling the appointment for this massage. I'm so wary to buy services on Groupon. I've had a few bad experiences. Luckily, this was not one. I called to schedule the appointment and had to book a month out with Sandy. I understand that some businesses are very busy, especially with a Groupon deal so this wasn't a problem. As the appointment drew nearer, I cancelled a week or so in advance (I believe it was to attend a Yelp event) :) and I had to book another appointment, another month out.
I am a patient person though, so I waited. Finally, the day had arrived! I left work early that day to be on time to the 5:00 apointment. I showed up a little early in case there was paperwork. Parking lot out front was full and I didn't know if street parking here was okay, but a spot opened up at just the right time. When I entered I met the Dr. who was very friendly and said it might be a little wait. He saved this from being a 3-star review. Sandy was running more than a little late. A simple call to me would have saved me from having to take time off work (and out of my paycheck). But I spent a little over 30 minutes in an amazing full-body massage chair that the Dr. put me in. And this made it better. Next time I'd hope for a call, but I'd probably still show up on time for the appointment and hope to get back in that chair.
The massage was a deep-tissue and she asked me how strong I wanted it. Her medium-strong is spot-on. Her hand muscles are obviously well-developed and she worked over the muscles all over my body. She offered back-only or full-body massage and I opted for full. I really enjoyed the moments she spent on my legs and feet. The oil she used was very light. It had an almost non-existence fragrance, that reminded me of something natural. When I got home I told my husband how great the massage was (he'd gone somewhere else for a simultaneous massage) and how clean my skin felt. For as much oil as she put on me I expected to be a sticky mess, but I just felt soft.
I was a little sore the next day in my shoulders, but this is expected with a deep-tissue. I expected the slight soreness I felt and it was good. I'd love to return to this office. A great Dr. running the place with his magic chair, and a fabulous massage from Sandy.

Walnut Creek Internet Cat Video Festival, Walnut Creek
9/9/13
Wow! Was really expecting more. We were there at 3 when the event started. Several vendors weren't prepared yet. It was a very hot day and the cats for adoption were ALL panting. They had icy water bottles in with them, and some were being fanned, but it seemed cruel to have them out in the heat. There were many vendors to begin with, but our favorites were Pet Food Express from downtown Walnut Creek, and two different artsy tables, from two stores in Lafayette. Both will be at the Lafayette ARt & Wine Festival at the end of the month. Hopefully it will be a cooler day and I can enjoy their art more at that event.
I was excited for festival food. Too bad for me! There was a chicago style hot dog truck and a frozen custard truck. Frozen custard sounded amazing, but at 330 when we were on our way out the owner said it'd be another ten minutes until she was ready. Did nobody get the memo with the event start time?
Lucky for us, we could hear live music while we were walking around, and so we headed up the hill to the Greenery where an awesome party was taking place with shade and good food! Several of the easy-up booths there had misting features, spraying cool water on the people in line.
I hope the cats were adopted and taken to nice, air-conditioned homes. Perhaps misting fans might work for kitties, too?
The similar Oakland Internet Cat Video Festival was much better than this small, unorganized event. I hope they learn from their mistakes if they repeat this event next year. At least the $10 entry cost went to a good cause.

Castle Inn & Suites, Anaheim
We had a great stay here for my husband's 30th bday trip to Disneyland. One block walk to Disney Way - can't get much closer! It's only a mile walk to Downtown Disney with ESPN Zone and Lego store and shopping but that beats paying for parking.
The place was cute - the pool wasn't huge but it was clean and a smaller, kiddie pool and good-sized hot tun were also on site. Plus, two sunbathing towers that were very castle-like!
There's a small giftstore on the property with snacks and alcohol and Disney items. Other shops (with better Disney stuff) are nearby, as well as several restaurants - there's something for everyone.
Our room had a nice, big TV and a single cup coffee maker and a fridge. Two queen beds. The carpets were clean, bathroom was very clean. Tub looked like it had seen better days but overall the room was nice. The towels were pretty rough and could use replacing since I imagine that's what bleach does to any towel over time, but this isn't something unique to this hotel.
We booked our room for Thursday and Friday night and paid $150 total including the taxes (lastminutetravel.com, or something?) Great deal for the location! Construction was taking place but we couldn't hear any noise. We could hear someone on the 4th floor running back and forth in the room. Control your kids, please.

I actually did have a weird rash on my leg that I noticed as we got into bed the second night. I figured it was a heat rash from the 13 hours of running around Disneyland, but after reading a few other reviews and looking at pictures online, I do think it might have been bed bugs. My husband didn't have any problems with bites. I'm kind of flattered. Normally bugs ignore me - probably cuz I eat lots of garlic and spicy food. Either way, it wasn't a big deal and it went away pretty quickly. Note: Nearby Los Angeles is in the top 5 of cities infested with bed bugs around the nation. San Francisco is #12. It happens.
I would definitely stay here again. The location was great and the price was awesome! The front desk could probably use a course on friendly, welcoming behavior, but other than that, no complaints.
JD Limelight, Accordian Player, Oakland
9/10/13
Accordions fascinate me. I love watching them being played. They have a lot more going on than most instruments. I could listen to piano all day, but I don't find watching someone play piano all that interesting. But if that piano is miniaturized and strapped to a squeeze box with bellows and buttons... then it becomes interesting!
Although accordion can be played while seated, it's also an instrument that the musician can play while walking around. Watching JD Limelight maneuver around a room full of people while keeping strong, harmonious melodies playing from his buttton box was a lot of fun! He was very entertaining and played well. The music was as great as the presentation! Very enjoyable performance and entertainer.

Benihana, Concord
9/10/13
Until last night, it had been a while since I'd been to Benihana. I like lunching here, but don't come often for dinner. However, as a recipient of their emails, I received a $30 gift certificate for my September birthday - good for use any day the entire month! Husband and I arrived separately and I put our name down. The hostesses were very warm and friendly and asked if we would be celebrating any birthdays. Yep!
When we were both present they were ready to seat us. We requested something with a good view of the TV for MNF! Our server greeted us shortly afterward and took our drink orders. I finally decided on Ocean Treasure ($36.50 with grilled lobster, scallop, and giant shrimp). Husband had the Benihana Special ($36.25 with lobster and steak). Both meals came with onion soup, salad, and a shrimp appetizer and ice cream.
Although service was five-star all night, the food was more like two-star. The onion soup was great. Unless you hate mushrooms like my husband. He ate around them and I got the rest. Salad followed and my bowl was dressed appropriately but poor husband's was drenched in dressing. He passed this on to me also but not even I could eat it with all the dressing. Our meals came next and he was surprised to see his steak had been grilled with mushrooms. Lots of them!! The menu hadn't mentioned this. It wasn't rare like he'd ordered either - medium perhaps, but not even medium rare. And definitely unseasoned, but perhaps that's why they give you dipping sauce. There was a ginger and a mustard sauce, and while I liked both, he didn't really care for either.
We both requested melted butter for the lobster and this took a long time to get to the table, but the garlicy butter that arrived was hot and worth the wait. I ate the entire container of butter :( and some of his. Then I licked it clean. It helped with my food since everything seemed just a tad over-cooked. The lobster was a little tough. Scallops were also tough instead of melt-in-your-mouth tender. I ordered hot sauce for my white rice (which they didn't charge me $0.75 cents for, even though that's the menu price, so that made me happy).
We were pretty full but managed to get a few bites of ice cream in us before asking for the check. It arrived with a suggested 18% gratuity already included in the total. I don't think I've even seen any restaurant do this for a party of two. Whatever. Service was good.
Unfortunately, we both arrived home feeling a little unsettled. Perhaps it was eating the equivalent of a half-stick of butter, plus all the dressing and the dishes of dipping sauce. But it takes a lot to upset my iron stomach. It was enough to make me hesitant to heat up my leftovers today.
The $30 gift is pretty generous. It only applies to the recipient's purchases so make sure to read the fine print before using. Beside Benihana and Denny's I can't think of a lot of places that give you a free bday meal! Our total was $71 after the discount and including the tip.

Illumine Arts, Point Richmond
9/11/13
Illumine Arts offers hand-crafted cards and prints from interfaith reflections of love, beauty, and joy. The artists embellish some of the cards with glitter or jewels. Positive messages and explanations about the image are on the cards.
Buddhist, Hindu, and Christian religions are acknowledged in the art, but some of the cards feature beauty in nature, such as a tiger, blush rose, or pink lotus. "The Lotus flower symbolizes divine purity and enlightenment, as well as regeneration and rebirth. This sacred flower grows in deep mud and closes and sinks in the water at night, rising and opening again at dawn, just like the sun. Out of the depths of darkness sooner or later the Lotus reaches the Light becoming the most beautiful flower ever...and it is the same for us; we are born, we toil, we grow and learn, and eventually we evolve into Perfection."
I love sending cards. On birthdays and special occasions my friends may find something other than a utility bill in their snail-mail box. Typically I just send the cards that the Humane Society sends out with their donation requests, but when I see beautiful cards with positive messages, I can always think of a special friend deserving of a hand-written hello.

Earl of Sandwich, Anaheim
9/11/13
Perhaps they are more of a lunch sandwich store than a breakfast sandwich place. Before going in to Disney we grabbed a bite here. Husband had a plain bagel, toasted, with cream cheese. ($1.99) I had an egg & cheese on English Muffin, but requested it without the English muffin (I wasn't very hungry). It's the same price regardless if you get bread or no bread. ($3.99)
Even though these were prob the two more boring menu items, there wasn't anything stand-out special about either of them. Perhaps some seasoned-salt or something on the egg? Add something!
You order at one register, then move down a line of people to pick up the food. We felt that on this particular day service was very slow, even though there weren't that many people in line (yet). The line was significantly longer when we left.

Golden Nail Salon, Pleasant Hill

I had a pedicure only for $25.00. I was just killing time while hubby got a hair cut at Sport Clips a couple doors down, and the place was pretty full so I figured it was pretty popular.
I was seated and the lady ran water in the foot tub. I told her it was cold water so she put it on hot only. It reached a point where I had to take my feet out. She was very apologetic when she felt it, though, I didnt' really care. I like hot. I like cold. What I don't like is forgetting to put the soap in the basin. I noticed after soaking quite a while that everyone else's water was blue and bubbly. Mine was just water.
The lady next to me played on her phone while her son sat to my left, literally twiddling his fingers, with the saddest expression I'd ever seen. So I talked to him about school starting and his teachers and classmates. And Mom played on Facebook. At least I had someone to talk to.
My nails came out fine. There were pretty and pink. She was a little rough with the cuticles though and my foot instinctively jerked a couple times. Guess I should've done a mai-pedi- combo, since other yelpers say it wasn't much more money than pedi- alone.

Tramway Market, Stateline, NV
9/11/13
We've stopped in this market on several occasions. It's very convenient if youre staying at the Ridge at Tahoe or the Wyndam/WorldMark timeshares. Although it's not walking distance from The Ridge, we did enjoy our walk from the timeshare units.
The prices are reasonable and the service was friendly. We bought snacks for the room and some frozen treats. They also sell clothing, gift items, and non-frozen foods, such as loaves of sourdough bread. Yum!
The best thing about the store is that they were open on 4th of July this year. We were in town for a wedding and stopped in here more than once that day. And they were open pretty late! It was wonderful.
There's a good pizza place next door - but not a lot else really close by. The market has frozen pizza if youre not in the mood for something expensive.

Subway, Suisun City
9/13/13
Grabbed an OJ in here ($1.90) in an effort to not be someone who runs into a business just to use the facilities without making a purchase. Friendly cashier.
To my surprise, the door to the restrooms actually leads out of Subway to a main lobby of the building, where the bathrooms are shared between all the businesses. Oh well, I enjoyed the orange juice.

Vinnie's Bar N Grill, Concord
9/13/13
Another reason to love Todos Santos Plaza! This bar sits in downtown Concord on a side street near Todos Santos Plaza. Their air conditioner works GREAT so on really, really hot Concord days, drop in and have a cold drink. It's lovely.
The long bar has lots of seating and wraps around to the back door. There are other tables near by for sitting as well. And pool! Themed nights like salsa dancing draw the crowds. The place will get packed, but that makes it easier to find a dance partner if youre out to be friendly.
Good bartenders - always been happy with service. Average drink prices. And they serve food which I think is awesome! We've only had side dishes (salads, garlic bread) but they have regular entrees as well.
I almost always end up in conversation with my neighbors when I'm sitting at the bar. It's a very friendly day crowd.

Disneyland Turkey Leg Cart, Anaheim
9/13/13
Willie Birds Turkey Legs in Santa Rosa, CA sets the standard for BBQ jumbo drumsticks pretty high. Disneyland's turkey legs are just about as good! It was a little bit smaller, but perfect for one (hungry) person. $10 for crunchy, juicy, tender turkey. It's not an easy item to eat without making a mess, so grab some napkins!
Unfortunately the cart can't give ice (only restaurants at Disneyland can), and they didn't have any plastic bags for saving the turkey if you can't finish it all at once. I was directed to a store across the way and they gave me a huge bag to put it in :( totally wasting plastic! Perhaps this cart should get bags; and make them proper size for the turkey leg.
Turkeys are very sweet, intelligent animals. It makes me sad to eat them. But it takes away a little of the guilty pain when it's this good. I won't settle for grandma's dry Thanksgiving birds any more, but amazing BBQ just can't be passed up sometimes!

Treasures of the Valley, Lagunitas
9/15/13
"Estate sale ahead." That's what the sign on the side of Sir Francis Drake said and boy did I get excited. It was literally the next driveway so my husband (aka my driver) missed the turn, but was happy to go back for me. We parked in a parking lot shared with one other business and I was a little disappointed to see that it was an antique store, rather than an actual estate/home. Regardless, we were going to check it out.
Several tables were set up out front and the store had music playing. It was a very small, one-room place, but had some really neat and unique items. Like a sequined holding stick thing with a jeweled spider pin and black feathers. Yeah, not sure what this was, but it was super cool looking.
Also for sale is jewelry, some very vintage looking clothes, tools, kitchen items, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Most of it was very pretty. I liked the stop - too bad the place wasn't any bigger.

Pyramid Taproom, Oakland Airport
2/24/14
What started out as a "cheers" with a $8 Smirnoff + Coke and a $14 Bloody Mary, ended with two soon-to-be flight passengers in an Airport. You would think that with respect for people cutting their last-drink/flight departure times a little close, they'd be on top of service. While that wasn't exactly the case with us (we could see our gate and we were in boarding group "A"), it still was frustrating to have to flag down our server to get the check. The place is not that big and we had to actually ask someone else to get it for us.
A $0.22 cent surcharge was on the receipt. I just noticed this and have no idea what that could have been for. Not a big deal, just odd to find unexplained items on your bill, no matter if they are for less than a quarter dollar.
Aside from service, our drinks were pretty good. While not strong, they were stronger than I expected for an airport bar. My husband's was definitely stronger than mine (the Bloody Mary), which was a bummer since mine was twice as much. But it was still tasty and I enjoyed it!

Firewood Cafe, Oakland Airport

Well I guess it's partly my fault that I walked away from this place unhappy. Over $6 for two bags of chips?! I get it, youre in an airport. You charge more because you can, but they're just bags of chips. Again, my fault for not bringing my own snacks on the flight.
I should've just ordered a pizza and tortured those on the flight sitting around me. We didn't see anyone walking by with pizza though and it was almost time to board, so I went with the chips. It turns out crunchy chips were also awkward to eat in the tight quarters. I felt bad chomp-chomp-chomping with a stranger sitting so close on my left.
The cashier was very nice though and wished me safe travels. Guess next time I fly out of Oakland I'll definitely be getting a pizza if I'm hungry.

Smith Field, Half Moon Bay
2/24/14
How lucky are the Little Leaguers that get to play ball in this park by the sea?! My husband and I stopped at the home field for Half Moon Bay's Little League while exploring the local area before heading to the beach nearby. There is a snack bar and several benches for sitting around the field. We easily found free parking in their private parking lot. It was empty the day we were visiting.
Behind the field sits hundreds of acres of conservation land; we briefly walked around here. It's beautiful. I never played Little League, but I imagine the families love getting to bring their children here for games.

Hot Dog On A Stick, Excalibur, Las Vegas
2/24/14
As we walked around the food court at Excalibur, I noticed someone carrying a tremendous, golden brown, crispy-fried corn dog. Hello, delicious food on a stick! I wasn't really in a "hot dog mood". I never am, to be honest, but after giving up on the other lack of options, we went back to look at the menu.
Holy veggie hot dog! What are you doing up there??!! I had no idea this place also fries up veggie dogs. On a stick. In golden brown, fried dough! I was a little reluctant. Would it look the same? How would it taste? I didn't know, but I gave it a shot and hot diggity dog I'm glad I did. Yum yum yum.
While the veggie dog (mine)($3.69) and beef dog (husband's)($43.9) were cooked in the same fryer, I thought about the surprising fact that the veggie dog was less expensive! How is that possible?! We ordered a fry to share ($2.79) and a Light Lemonade (with sugar substitute) ($3.69 for large)
Everything was really good. We were the last customer of the night or else I probably would've ordered another dog, even though I really wasn't that hungry after the first one. I wish EVERY food establishment would have a veggie option. Most of the time it's going to be a very tasty, healthier, guilt-free treat. I do eat meat, but if there's a veggie option, I always take it! Glad I did here, The food was great!

Crazy Ely Polo, Las Vegas
2/24/14
Grabbed some tall cans and brown bags for a great price. They were cold and they were going to be snuck into the Jersey Boys show. My husband and I still had some time to kill before the show and ended up killing one of the beers. Perhaps we didn't even need to sneak the second one in, because nobody ever said anything to us and we saw other people pulling cans out of their purses and jackets. But it was a little more fun doing it our way.
Crazy Ely store had snacks and drinks. The line moved quickly and service at the register was somewhat cordial. Convenient stop!

Stopped in to this location to grab some kitty food. We've been buying a few cans of wet here and there to try them out. Grabbed four cans with flavors like tuna and salmon. It was a buy 3, get one free deal. Gotta like that! Our 4 cans still cost us almost $11 but we love the cats so once we find their favorite food, price won't be an issue. I can't complain about spending a little money on their food when I spend so much on my own. I love my furry girls!
This store isn't as close to my home as the Concord location, but it's conveniently located anyhow and it was easy to find what I needed. Friendly service at check-out.

Sweetwater Music Hall, Mill Valley

Yelp's Sweetheart Social recently brought my family to Sweetwater Music Hall. It was a really fun experience and we had no idea this place even existed. It caught me off guard when two parents and their young child were turned away at the door for our private event and the mother stood there for a minute before cursing. Twice. She said she "was really in the mood for Sweetwater." And I took that to be a good sign.
Stellar service with friendly staff. The one staff person I interacted with had only worked there a few months but said he loved it. I told him how lucky he was to have a job he loves; that so many people don't enjoy going to work. I also complimented him on the food dishes that we tried (the fried cheese balls being my favorite) and he told me a little bit more about the rest of their menu and said that everything is great. I believe him!
The music room itself has a stage with a dance floor in front of it and some small tables further back toward the bar. I only had one drink from the bar the night of the event and I didn't order it, but the bar was across the back wall of the place.
Great venue and we were lucky to hear a fantastic band playing: The Easy Leaves. We danced a few songs and had a great time on the mostly open dance floor. How lucky were we! Would definitely come back to this place and highly recommend to friends.

Found some help with the wet cat food aisle from a very friendly and knowledgeable employee. He literally went down the entire aisle with us, from left to right, top to bottom, asking if our cats had any special needs.
He explained the difference in prices, quality, substance, and what the varieties did and did not contain. We went home with 7 cans of various sizes - one variety was grain-free and the more-expensive Verus brand contained green lipped mussel. I bought several of the flavors they offered including chicken and pumpkin, which the cats really like. Green lipped mussel was fun to research a little more at home, and i learned it has a lot of benefits for cats, and especially our 11 yr old who likely has a bit of kitty arthritis. It can be used as an alternative medicine for healthy treatment of cats.
Since we were recently instructed to switch our older cat to an all canned-food diet, the little cat gets to benefit from this too. We haven't found their "favorite" yet, (perhaps the Verus brand?) but it's nice to have a store with a good selection and employees so friendly and helpful.
They also sell baby chicks here. Do not pet them. Even though they're adorably cute and fluffy. My husband read aloud the big sign posted above them as my hand started reaching down to say hi. Aloud and loudly. Embarrassing for Amy :)

Coco's Family Restaurant, Concord

Searching for a new breakfast spot, my husband and I stopped in here the other day. It was a Sunday, early afternoon. Upon entering, I wanted to leave and go somewhere else. I kind of just looked too much like a chain, and I wanted something with more of a diner feel. But Casey insisted we stay.
I was really surprised to look at the menu. LOTS of healthy and reduced-calorie options. Whoever does their menus did an amazing job. I decided to skip breakfast and go with a lunch option. I ordered a fish with veggies and rice. Unfortunately they were out of rice so they came back and asked what I'd like substituted, and I requested the quinoa salad I'd seen was served with a different fish choice.
Our food arrived and the presentation was just awful. I found the fish buried under a bunch of other things on the plate. The quinoa was cold and there was something mushy in it that I couldn't identify. Pumpkin perhaps? I asked the server and she said it was described in the menu. Yeah, described as "quinoa salad" or something generic. So I never did find out what was in it. The texture turned me off and I couldn't really eat it. Aside from that, everything else on my plate was tasty. It seemed a little greasy for being one of the healthy menu choice items, but I enjoyed both the fish and the sautéed veggies.
Husband did not enjoy his breakfast.
Our server was working really hard. She did a good job, but when youre the only server for one half a restaurant, it's not fair to the customers. I felt like she was already walking away as I was readying to ask more questions. It was our first time dining there and while I understood her need to attend to more decisive people, it's too bad management has it set up like that.
Lots of older couples were dining here, and they all seemed to enjoy it, but we likely won't be back soon. Unless of course I have some sort of graphic arts problem, because whoever designed their menu does fabulous work!

Alborz Persian/Iranian Restaurant, Walnut Creek

I really enjoyed my lunch today at Alborz. I have driven past a million times and it's been bookmarked to try for quite a while. So today I went there for lunch alone!
I browsed the menu and found a variety plate under the Kabob section. It was a veggie sampler but unfortunately was just placed in the wrong part of the menu. It was more like a combination of appetizers, so it wouldn't be served with saffron rice and a roasted tomato, like the other kabob dishes. A little disappointed, I went with the salmon kabob instead. ($15.13)
The bread basket arrived with two pats of butter. I asked for a side of olive oil as well, which I added some of the table seasoning (sumac) to and used that for dipping. The bread was good but was served cold. Often it's warm when it's served at other Persian places, but it was still tasty.
Lunch arrived shortly after I had a few pieces of bread in me. A healthy roasted tomato was chopped into my saffron rice. I requested a side of hot sauce and mixed that in as well. The salmon kabob had great flavor but was slightly overcooked. I also thought the portion was someone on the small side for $15.00. But it was very good with bites of juicy tomato. A cold tomato slice and cucumber also sad on the edge of the plate. I had a lot leftover, which I packed into the to-go container I brought, and finished at my desk once I was back at work.
Service was outstanding and I really enjoyed their pretty patio. On one side of the front entrance is open patio seating, and the other is comfy lounge-like seating. It seems like a great place for groups. Not sure how big the inside is, since I never went in. I had 3 different staff people attend to me. Perhaps I went at the perfect lunch hour. It was not crowded and the staff was very attentive.

Krave Jerky, Sonoma
2/24/14
My mom is the manager of a Bay Area Lucky's store so I often get to try yummy new items as they make their way onto store shelves. Even if you work at a grocery store, it's unlikely you'll try everything the store is selling. A shame really, since lots of great things may go undiscovered. Which is why it's especially important for businesses like Krave to help get their name out there by showing up at events such as the recent North Bay Yelp Elite Event in Mill Valley.
At this event, the Krave representative Jennifer had samples of all their flavors. I'd only tried a few before. The tender jerky was my favorite with Garlic Chili Pepper seasoning. Their jerky is made from different type of meat and the variety of flavors is really my favorite part. We only use one flavor combination when we dehydrate at home.
Krave jerky makes a great product for the meat-eaters. I recently bought a meatless jerky stick from a health foods store and it made me wish they had a variety of flavors to choose from. Perhaps down the road Krave will introduce a 4th option for our vegan friends!

Brand new Starbucks on N. California St.! Awesome! The one inside of target is more convenient to my work, but I came in here today to check it out since it is their grand opening.
Lots of seating both inside and out. Very nice layout and display of food with easy to read menu. Pretty much your typical Starbucks but all shiny and new.
Friendly service from the girl who took my order and answered my questions.

I recently stopped here to meet with a lady named Karen, and her father who is a resident. It's easily accessible to east-bound traffic going up ygnacio valley road. I found guest parking and entered a lobby area where I was greeted by three friendly women. One knew exactly who I was there to see. She escorted me to a private dining room. As we walked there I noticed a popcorn machine and declined her offer of some since I was headed to dinner soon after, but it looked so good!!
A huge, beautiful bouquet of flowers also sat in the lobby, and the deco of the entire place was tasteful and elegant. The dining room she brought me to was spacious and airy. The woman was extremely friendly and accommodating. The pair joined me soon after I was situated and Karen told me how much she and her father liked this facility. Very understandable! Really pretty, with a great staff!

I used to spend a LOT of time in this plaza. Early 20s found me playing pool and eating popcorn at Farrington's on many-a-night. I occasionally even walked back home to my parent's if I couldn't find a ride. It wasn't far from home.
While I still stop at Farr's from time to time, most visits here now are to Taqueria Los Gallos Express. Taco Tuesday here is a treat! They have the best salsa bar in CCC. They are hidden in the back by Safeway and Subway and a Thai restaurant. The Beauty Source used to be in this corner too but recently expanded to a bigger location.
An awesome, cash-only breakfast discovery is Plaza Cafe hidden in the front near Nation's and a Diamond Store. Their hollandaise sauce is amazing and they make a delicious homemade breakfast gravy.
Chase Bank (my husband's bank) is in another part of the plaza with a dental group and nail place. Insurance companies, frozen yogurt, and realty. Even a shoe store, hair salon, and trophy store! They really have it all. Next time you're in downtown Peasant Hill, stop in this Plaza, across from the Crescent Plaza shopping area.

This review is a little overdue, but I wanted to note that we were really happy with the assistance we received from Paul. He was very knowledgeable and informed us of different options tailored to our needs. He made suggestions and gave us information without ever making us feel pressured.
We really like the simple-to-use but especially secure systems offered by this company, and the wonderful customer service we've received up to this point is very encouraging. A company is no better than the people running it, and from what we've seen so far, they have some great people working for them

Starbucks, Petaluma

Used the drive-thru at this Starbucks location on our way to Petaluma to see the in-laws. We were both falling asleep on 37 (me literally sleeping, and Casey being jealous of my snores) so I suggested we grab a couple espressos.
Casey is a white chocolate mocha guy, so I don't think he knew what to expect for espresso taste, but his reaction was pretty funny. Yeah, they're not great. But a double espresso with extra whipped cream is a little bit of a pick-me-up so that's what we both ordered.
We didn't really end up with "extra" whipped cream, but there was some in the small espresso cup. I mixed all of mine in and enjoyed the quick sips. Casey mixed most of his in and decided he thought it still tasted bad. :) Cute.
The drive-thru was fast, even though we were several cars back. The drinks were ready by the time we reached the window to pay. Service was friendly and served with a smile. More whipped cream next time, please!

Well the size of the store itself is going to somewhat limit the inventory, but the shelves were mostly empty and so it's not just size that was surprisingly small. Not much of a selection but we took a look around.
The gentleman behind the counter asked if he "could help us with something" when we walked in. We replied that we were "just looking". His response: "Well, what are you looking for?" ...??? Just looking to me means we're just looking around. If I were actually looking for something I would have told you what it was with my first answer.
We did ask about 30-30 rounds, which they didn't have, and also if they carried a stock wrench, which they also did not have. We remembered we needed some grease for the newly built AR and when we decided on the brand for $6 and some change, the guy wouldn't let us pay with our credit card. He said he wouldn't be making any money if we used our Visa. What the f is that?!
Paid cash, but won't be making any return visits here. Too many other good stores with better policies and employees.

Concord Community Park

Concord is a beautiful City and our residents are so lucky to have lots of parks, nature areas, and open space through the hills. Not far from our home is the Concord Community Park. It has a pool, tennis courts, lots of picnic tables, and two large playgrounds. Huge open grassy areas for playing and lots of trees for shade. Great for kids, families, groups and events.
Not far away is the Markham Nature Center and Arboretum, with wonderful walking trails around the small enclosure. Definitely worth checking out if you're at the neighboring Park.

Dos Amigos Vista Point, Los Banos
2/9/14
This Vista point should not be confused with a"scenic view" stop. While the aqueduct itself is pretty cool, nothing else about this I-5 turnout for NB travelers is positive. The slope along the waterway is littered with all kinds of junk and trash. At least three garbage cans are available for people who pull off the road, but most of it is probably accumulated from jerks just rolling down their windows, with apathetic fingers crossed that no chp are around to see them violate the "no littering" laws. Perhaps a bigger fine would be a bigger deterrent, but I doubt it. Still, it's a safe place to pull over and stretch your legs.

Thanks, CHP. Thanks for keeping the highways safe, working a dangerous job, and answering our call with friendly service.
While driving through the valley on I-5N, just north of Lost Hills, we saw two little dogs on the freeway. Moments later, we saw their little furry friend laying dead near an over pass. The dogs wanted to help their friend but it was too late.
My husband and I love animals. We can't have pet dogs and didn't know how we could help but we couldn't get it out of our minds. We turned around at the next off-ramp a few miles up (twisselman exit) and drove back. A ranch with sheep was nearby and when we reached that landmark again we saw all 3 dogs.
Once facing North again we pulled a safe distance off the road. The littlest dog went through the fence separating the ranch property from the busy interstate, and after a few barks our direction, the second dog jumped over. The 3rd dog is jumping and running in doggy heaven.
CHP dispatch said they were sending someone right away, when we called and informed them that the two dogs would probably keep returning to the dangerous roadway to check on their friend. We felt better (a little bit anyhow) and then got back on the road.

John Wayne Airport, Santa Ana

For travelers just dropping off airline passengers, this was an easy and efficient airport to navigate through. We didn't even had security hassle us when I took my time rearranging the front and back seats of our car.
Cousin flew out if Alaska Airlines early this morning and we pulled to the drop-off curb without any problems. A pretty road lined with Palm trees led out from the little airport back to the major freeway.
Safe travels, everyone!

Stopped in here with my cousin and hubby to quickly grab some Diet Pepsi for my dad, soda and cookies for the Mr., and jalapenos for me. We're all in town visiting and this isn't far from my Aunt's home.
Everything was easy to find but the store was really cold so we didn't spend more time than necessary. Check-out was cordial. The cashier didn't ask if we had a Vons card so I'm glad my cousin thought to type her number in because it saved us 23% ($3.64).

We didn't stop for gas outside, just needed a fresh gallon of water for inside the vehicle so we went into the Palace mini Mart. Leave it to my husband to finish off all the water in the car just before the start of our road trip.
The store isn't huge but had all the essentials. We each grabbed a snack and the nice cashier let me fill my water bottle with ice water from their fountain soda machine ( I asked first). We also bought a gallon of water for refills.
He was just starting his shift and was very friendly. My husband used their clean restroom while the cashier and I talked. Unfortunately, the Mexican food stand inside was already closed for the night, or I would've left with 2x1 tacos, too.
Good stop, not far from the Grapevine. Hopefully our last stop this trip. :)

Sinclair Gas, Las Vegas
2/7/14
I never look at gas prices. I'm a creature of convenience. This was our final stop before the airport's car rental return and it was convenient in that regard.
I went inside and bought some snacks while hubby put a little fuel in the Nissan rental. Large, clean, well-stocked. But the counter service included no free smile as we paid our money. I'd received sad news earlier that day and I was still able to manage a sincere smile. It unfortunately went unreturned.
I think sometimes people forget that their actions really affect others. Even if you're just a voice on a phone, you never know if patience rather than irritability might make a big difference to the person on the other end of the line. Especially true when in-person. Smiles are contagious. Well, usually... :)

Pea Soup Andersen's Restaurant, Gustine
2/7/14
For my husband and myself, great service is more important than good food. There are tons of restaurants with awesome food, but very few get my return business unless I enjoy the overall dining experience; namely, terrific service.
On our way to southern CA for a very sad funeral of my young cousin, we pulled off the I-5S and stopped in for a bite. We were only a couple hours inti the drive with almost 3x that distance to go.
The soup and salad I ordered ($10), and my husband's Monte Cristo sandwich, plus 2 drinks, was more than worth the $30 bill. The food was great and we never had to ask for refills. Roberto was on top of it and a really sincerely friendly server as well. He went beyond his server duty of asking polite questions. He seemed to care about our responses.
I asked for hot sauce with my food and he personally made me a hot salsa. In the back; in the kitchen! He even told me how he made it and warned me of the heat. It was So good and his thoughtfulness went a long way for two melancholy travelers. Thanks for being a kind person! His tables were full, the place was packed, and this unexpected act of delicious kindness deserves real recognition. Request Roberto for great service to complement your wonderful food.

Auntie Anne's, Excalibur Food Court, Las Vegas
2/7/14
I made the wrong food decision the other night; Auntie Anne's would've been the right one. Instead, I had to watch my husband eat his pretzel-wrapped hot dog while I ate oily, over-cooked green beans from Pick Up Stix next door. It was awful. http://amy81yelp.blogspot.com/2014/02/pick-up-stix-excalibur-food-court-las.html
While I ate my food I watch hubby enjoy his hot dog/pretzel. I should have just ordered a pretzel by itself. With lots of mustard. Would've been much healthier and much more enjoyable. The bite of pretzel I had from him was great. Especially since we were eating at midnight.
This might be one of the better food options in the Excalibur Food Court.

The Original Hick'ry Pit, Walnut Creek
2/7/14
I came here with my family many times when I was younger, but more recently, over the last few years, our office has ordered to-go meals for staff birthday luncheons. Between 12 and 18 people attend these celebration lunches (It's really cool of our bosses; everyone likes being paid to eat a free lunch!!) We most commonly order ribs, chicken, onion rings and/or fries, beans, cole slaw, and perhaps a cream pie for dessert.
We've had a couple of not-great experience, with dry chicken or over-cooked ribs, but for the most part nothing that has been terrible. Our most recent pick-up was one of our better experiences. Everyone was cooked perfectly, seasoned wonderfully, and for once, we had a little bit of almost everything leftover. (Except the onion rings, of which I never get more than one or two from the shared container, but they are big and thickly breaded so this is perfect for me.) My favorite item is their cole slaw dressing. I'm not sure if it's made from butter and sugar, but it kind of has that taste and consistency. I'm not much of a sweets person but I LOVE this stuff. They always give us way more dressing than we need which is awesome. The containers of BBQ sauce are also excessively large - perhaps one area where they could use a smaller portion; we hate to waste so much. I don't really like baked beans so I don't ever try these, but everyone else seems to like them.
Overall, for large to-go food orders we've been happy with service, accuracy, and quality of the food items.

Smokin' Oakland Grill, Oracle Arena, Oakland
2/7/14
The Club 200 Coors Light Club is just across from the Smokin' Oakland Grill. With $12 beers in our hands we walked over to get some food. My husband ordered a chicken strip and fry combo plate. I was disappointed to hear we couldn't upgrade to garlic fries.
I watched our food and belongings while he headed to the condiment station. No little paper cups for katsup/mustard were there so he came back and grabbed the food tray and made another trip. Our plate returned doused in Kinder's BBQ for him and jalapeno slices for me. The fries were excellent but had become very messy. I had a bite of the chicken and it was good too, but perhaps the Kinder's helped some.
I would have ordered nachos but they looked so boring. The first level of the Coliseum has loaded nachos though near the north entrance. Find these! They looked amazing.
Our new friend Kaje shared his Smokin' garlic fries with me and I fell in love. (With the fries) :) But Kaje was awesome too. He let me finish them after the game started (he had his eyes on the nacho prize and wanted to save room.) A happy Amy got her garlic fries AND made a new friend. Overall, very good food for a professional sporting event.

Blueberry Hill Family Restaurant, Las Vegas (1505 Flamingo)
2/6/14
REVIEW #1,000 - Blueberry Hill Family Restaurant deserves this spot!
After an early morning phone message from our hotel trying to sell us spa services, we were out of bed and ready to get out of that casino once we were done at their gym. We stopped at Chase to get some cash, and only then realized it was getting late and we hadn't eaten yet. Blueberry was visible from the bank's location so we excitedly headed there. As we walked in, the hungry husband and myself were happy to see it wasn't packed, but wasn't empty either.
I ordered two eggs, hashbrowns and sourdough, with a side of the hot house salsa and a roasted jalapeno. (I had seen one in the menu pictures and had to have it.) It didn't take long for the hot food to arrive and our waitress told me they'd roasted 2 jalapenos for me! Yumm. These were no ordinary jalapenos. I don't know how they found huge, gigantic jalapenos, but they were awesome. Really hot, too!
Everything on the plate was yummy. My hashbrowns were cooked crispy and the sourdough was decent (it's hard to judge sourdough outside of the Bay Area because we really have the best stuff there!) The salsa was so good too! I could only eat one of the oversized jalapenos but our nice waitress brought me some Saran Wrap so that I could take the other one with me.
Service was great. Our server was attentive and friendly. I wish I knew her name, but the receipt only says "Server #8" 1/29/14 12:59 p.m. People like her are the reason we enjoy going out to eat so often. ($20.71 total for our breakfast.)

Alamo Rent-A-Car, Las Vegas
2/3/14
I arranged for a rental car through a Southwest Vacations package, which booked our car through Alamo. Upon arriving and picking up our car, I was informed that what I thought was my CA driver's license (since changing my name in 2012) was actually a CA Identification card. I'd never noticed this and was shocked when they explained why they couldn't rent the car to me, but they made transferring the rental into my husband's name very easy. This was totally my fault and now I need to request a new driver's license from DMV. I understand their policy and felt they were really nice about it. Note: my driver's license is in good standing with no points on my record for almost the last 10 years, but I had no valid way to prove this, so I really liked how they handled the situation. Plus, it got me out of driving around town the four days we were in Vegas.
Our car rental totaled about $35 for four days and just under 50 miles of driving. We filled the tank before returning it for less than $10. All around, a good deal. The Nissan Versa was perfect for getting us to and from. The interior had been vacuumed but not wiped down and something was spilled near the interior center console. Given this isn't a large car, they lose a star for not noticing the dirty inside of this cute compact. Overall very happy with the rental and the price.
