Big - O Tires, Walnut Creek

12/29/13

While I understand that every business should follow the policies it sets, yesterday we learned that Big O Tires are independently owned and the policy in WC is to require hybrid vehicles to use synthetic oil during oil changes. Had we received friendly service while paying three times the regular price I would have less distaste, but we will no longer return to or support this location.

Our Altima hybrid has over 100,000 miles so when Scott said using regular oil would void the warranty we both laughed. He replied that some people have an extended warranty; we don't. My father has owned a successful auto shop for over 30 years. He's comfortable putting in whatever oil my husband wants. The manufacturer's recommendation is based on viscosity and also dependent on whether or not youre changing the filter as well. Even though Big O said you can go 8,000 miles on the synthetic oil before needing another change, that's not how my husband maintains his vehicle.

When we began dating, he lived in Florida and the car drove across country more than once. While engaged, he lived in Tulare and drove home every weekend. Through a 16 month period while we were married he also lived in Paso Robles, again, driving to the Bay every weekend to see me. He should determine the type of oil change he wants for his car and given that their across-the-street competitor Jiffy Lube will allow the regular oil at the lower cost, they will now receive the business that Big O lost from us. Plus, their employees are very friendly!

After we returned from walking the block while we waited yesterday, not ONE employee greeted us as we walked back in. The one helping us the most was less than friendly and we honestly both felt like we were being lied to about the store policy. If you don't like working Saturdays in service industry, you're not making that hard for the customers to figure out. The two star is only because I enjoyed the free hot tea and cold water available in the waiting room.
