The Original Hick'ry Pit, Walnut Creek

2/7/14

I came here with my family many times when I was younger, but more recently, over the last few years, our office has ordered to-go meals for staff birthday luncheons.  Between 12 and 18 people attend these celebration lunches (It's really cool of our bosses; everyone likes being paid to eat a free lunch!!)  We most commonly order ribs, chicken, onion rings and/or fries, beans, cole slaw, and perhaps a cream pie for dessert.

We've had a couple of not-great experience, with dry chicken or over-cooked ribs, but for the most part nothing that has been terrible. Our most recent pick-up was one of our better experiences. Everyone was cooked perfectly, seasoned wonderfully, and for once, we had a little bit of almost everything leftover. (Except the onion rings, of which I never get more than one or two from the shared container, but they are big and thickly breaded so this is perfect for me.) My favorite item is their cole slaw dressing. I'm not sure if it's made from butter and sugar, but it kind of has that taste and consistency. I'm not much of a sweets person but I LOVE this stuff. They always give us way more dressing than we need which is awesome.  The containers of BBQ sauce are also excessively large - perhaps one area where they could use a smaller portion; we hate to waste so much. I don't really like baked beans so I don't ever try these, but everyone else seems to like them.

Overall, for large to-go food orders we've been happy with service, accuracy, and quality of the food items.

  1. I was invited to this very lunch but could not attend. Unfortunately for me!
