Mr. Shasta Vista Point, Castella

5/23/14

Last eruption was in the 1700s
There's nothing I'm better at than turning a regularly eight and a half hour drive into a 12 hour road trip. We stopped repeatedly on the drive from Concord, CA to Bend, OR. We had planned for some of the stops ahead of time, but also stopped several times for things that we saw along the way that looked interesting.

By the time we reached the vast, raising roads through the Mt. Shasta Recreation Area we realized we were a little behind "schedule", (lots of unplanned stops), but the views of the mountains were extraordinary here so we took the opportunity to stop again at this scenic Vista Point.

We stretched our bodies as we walked along the paved path toward a lookout with a picturesque view of Mount Shasta in front of us. The concrete had fun facts about the mountain carved in it, such as when it last erupted, how many people succeed in climbing to the top each year, and how many glaciers currently exist on it.

Don't miss this spot right off the side of the freeway. There's about a half mile warning before you pull off, and it's a really easy ramp to get back on the freeway.
